as you can see below the serial number range is
completely different for the chronograph to the
non chronograph models, there are 2 sets of numbers
on the case back one is the model or part number
which is generally a 3 or 4 digit number and then
the serial number, some examples of the models below,
after 1978 when Ernest Schneider took over the serial

The
first two numbers after the letter signify which
Breitling caliber movement has been used for the
watch As stated earlier from 1978 the number system
was totally changed , the new system comprised of
a letter followed by 5 numbers, the letter indicated
what the watch was made from, as an example 13 is
the cal 13 (valjoux 7750) or 17 is the cal 17 (ETA
2824) or 12 is a cal 12 (lemania 1873 or 1877)
The
third number states whether the watch is a certified
chronometer , this will be 0 if it is not an independently
certified chronometer or 3 if it is a certified
chronometer also a 4 and 6 has been used which again
shows it is not a certified chronometer
The
last 2 numbers show the model of the watch as an
example the A17605 is a steel Breitling shark automatic
non chronometer with eta 2824 movement
